BALA KING

BALA KING"

(Adaptation of Brecht's "The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui")

First Performance: March 1998

Written by: Shahid Nadeem

Directed by: Madeeha Gauhar

Bala King, an “unemployed” Palawan gang leader, decides to leave his Taxali Gate adda and try his luck in the Badami Bagh world of inter-city road transport. He bribes, blackmails and intimidates the businessmen and shopkeepers to accept his protection, at a very heavy premium. Bala Pehlawan changes his name to Bala King, receives lessons in public speaking, eliminates all opposition, and eventually establishes his total control over the area. The rise of Bala King and the inability of the people in resisting his dictatorial advances, show society’s vulnerability to violence, blackmail and corruption.

Bala King, is a very relevant and meaningful play for the Pakistani audience, where violence and crime appears to pay politically and where a complacent and acquiescent majority seems helpless against the forces of corruption, crime and violence.

However, the story is narrated with humour, song and dance, making the play a delightful experience.
