Over 20 million people have signed up for Mobilink Microfinance Bank Limited (MMBL), which is Pakistan's biggest digital bank. Eight million of those digital wallets are currently active. It was founded in April 2012 by VEON Co. and began doing business as MMBL. In November 2012, it teamed up with Pakistan's biggest telecom company, JAZZ, to start branchless banking under the name JAZZCASH. This bank has 74 branches, more than 1559 employees, a network of over 90,000 branch-less banking agents (which is growing), and a USSD (GSM)-based digital channel in the country that offers savings, micro enterprise (MSME) loans, small housing loans, remittances, collection (of utility bills and loan installments), mobile wallets, insurance, G2P, B2B, and B2P payments. Its business model is a hybrid one that combines traditional microfinance with mobile and digital banking technologies.
Even though Mobilink bank is still new, it has quickly become one of the leaders in its field. It reached financial break-even in just four years, which is one of the fastest times in the business. The Bank has had great financial results in 2016, 2017, and 2018.
Under the brand name JAZZCASH, Mobilink Bank and JAZZ want to be the market leaders in branchless banking, digital banking, and microfinance by giving the people of Pakistan simple, new, and useful goods and services. The MMBL plan is to move banking from a small number of physical locations to cell phones. This will make a big difference in helping people who don't have bank accounts get them through digital means. Since its founding in 2012, the Bank has given loans to more than 500,000 small and micro companies. In 2018 and 2019, it was named the "Bank of the Unbanked Award" winner.
